Walmart's $200M Plan in Florida

Retailer Looking to Improve Customer Experience
April 12, 2018

Walmart says it’s investing $200 million in Florida to build and improve 43 stores while also testing new technologies and innovations across the state.

The retailing giant plans to open five of its smaller-formet Neighborhood Market grocery stores statewide in 2018, including three in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. A sixth grand opening will be a Supercenter in Jacksonville.

Meanwhile, 37 stores will be remodeled, including 12 each in Central Florida and Tampa Bay, and eight more in South Florida.

"The research shows that consumers don't mind shopping, but what they hate is the shopping experience," Alan Bush, head of retail consulting company Northlake Partners in West Palm Beach, told CoStar News. "This is clearly aimed at one thing: keeping Walmart relevant."

The move is part of a nation-wide push by the Bentonville, Ark.-based retail giant to stem the flow of customers to the Internet, especially e-commerce behemoth Amazon.

Walmart recently reported comp sales growth of 2.1 percent for the fiscal year ending Jan. 31, indicating customers are responding to the company’s business strategy – which includes new technology and advancements in home delivery and in-store pickup of online grocery and merchandise orders, in an attempt to make shopping faster and easier for its customers nationwide – the retailer said in a corporate release.

What’s more, customers in some markets will be able to skip checkout lines by scanning items with their mobile phones and paying instantly.

“Customers have told us they want the convenience of shopping how, when and where they want,” Elise Vasquez-Warner, a Walmart vice president, said in a statement. “And, here in Florida, we’ll achieve that by building off the momentum we had last year, accelerating the rollout of customer-centered innovations, creating more than 1,000 jobs this year alone, and maintaining a sharp focus on improving our store experience.”
