UC Berkeley Hopes to Award Contract For Helios Facility This Week

October 12, 2009
The University of California, Berkeley is planning to choose a contractor this week to build the Helios Energy Research facility, a five-story, 112,800-square-foot building adjacent to the central campus in downtown Berkeley, CA.

The Helios Energy center will house the Energy Biosciences Institute and the UC Berkeley Bioengineering Program, which are conducting research to find solutions to global warming. The project will be built at the former State Department of Health Services site.

Total project costs of about $133.2 million will be paid with a combination of $40 million in previously approved state lease-revenue bonds and external financing.

The UC Board of Regents is expected to consider designs for the Helios building at its January 2010 meeting. Barring unforeseen circumstances, construction could begin by summer 2010, for completion by late 2012 or early 2013.

The university plans a total of more than 800,000 square feet of off-campus construction in the downtown Berkeley area.
