Microsoft Seeks to Buy, Expand Longtime Silicon Valley Campus

City Must Approve Plan to Renovate Campus In Shoreline Corridor North Submarket

Microsoft has submitted plans for a major upgrade and expansion of the campus it has occupied for more than 15 years in Mountain View, CA, disclosing plans Thursday to buy the 32-acre campus it has occupied since 1981.

The Redmond, WA-based computing giant occupies about 515,700 square feet of leased space in the five buildings comprising the Microsoft Technology Center in Mountain View's Shoreline Corridor North submarket. Plans submitted to the city would modernize and enlarge the campus by about 25%.

"Microsoft is acquiring the Mountain View Silicon Valley Campus to build a state-of-the-art facility and create an exceptional place to work," Microsoft Executive Vice President Qi Lu wrote in an e-mail to employees, adding that the company has nearly doubled its local presence and has opened offices in San Francisco, Palo Alto and Sunnyvale to accommodate the growth.

The Silicon Valley campus, opened in 1981, originally housed engineers from such Microsoft products as Hotmail and PowerPoint and since then has developed products and technologies there that have made key contributions to the success of Xbox, Office and Bing, among others, Lu said.

Mountain View is also headquarters to other of the world's largest tech companies, including Google's famed "Googleplex," Symantec and Intuit.

Lu wrote that the announcement "marks the very beginning of a longer term process" and that Microsoft's real estate and facilities department is working with Mountain View city planners for approval of the plan to redevelop the campus.

"Sustainability, collaboration, and health & wellness are at the center of the design, incorporating features such as team courtyards, easy access to the outdoors, an onsite gym, and LEED Platinum certification," Lu said. "Minimizing business disruption during the renovation is a priority and we will work with teams to plan and coordinate."

The company would keep and renovate a 113,949-square-foot office building at 1085 La Avenida St. and a 93,688-square-foot building at 1075 La Avenida. Four new buildings totaling nearly 130,000 would bring the total space occupied at the site to just under 645,000 square feet, according to plans.

Construction will take at least three years to complete and the announcement will result in no immediate impact to the Redmond, WA-based computing giant's Bay Area operations, which currently employ over 2,000 people.

"We don’t expect any visible renovation or construction activity until early 2017," Microsoft spokeswoman Emily Horn told CoStar.
