McCownGordon Construction Slated to Break Ground on Nine-Story Research Tower Next Month

Children’s Mercy to Expand on Hospital Hill Campus in Kansas City
January 18, 2018
McCownGordon Construction is slated to break ground on the nine-story Children’s Research Institute on the Hospital Hill campus of Children’s Mercy, between E. 23rd St. and Gillham Rd., in the first quarter of 2018.

The 375,000-square-foot children’s research tower will be constructed above an existing eight-level parking garage with four above-grade floors, and is slated to deliver by the end of 2020.

BSA Life Structures designed the facility to be entirely encased in glass, and will have both wet- and dry-lab space. The structure will total 3,000 employees, which is significantly more than the Children’s Mercy Hospital at 2401 Gillham Rd. in Kansas City.

The Sunderland Foundation and the Hall Family Foundation have collaboratively donated $150 million to launch construction and recruitment for the research facility.

Dr. Roy Jensen, director of The University of Kansas Cancer Center, said, "This is a transformational event, not only for Kansas City, but for children's health care. It's been in the works for quite some time."
