Gates-Vinik JV Announces Design Team for Water Street Tampa Megadevelopment

A Dozen Globally and Nationally Known Firms Will Handle Architecture, Interiors for Project's 18 Buildings
August 24, 2017
Developers of the planned $3 billion, 9 million-square-foot Water Street Tampa megadevelopent in downtown Tampa named design teams and revealed other details about the project, one of the largest downtown master developments in the U.S.

Strategic Property Partners, LLC (SPP), a joint development venture between Tampa Bay Lightning NHL team owner Jeff Vinik and former Microsoft chairman Bill Gates' Cascade Development asset management firm, released a time-lapse animatic showing the conceptual phasing for the development to be built over several years on more than 50 acres of Tampa waterfront.

SPP named design teams that will produce architectural and interior designs for the project. CookFox Architects, Morris Adjmi Architects, Olson Kundig, Kohn Pederson Fox (KPF) Associates, Gensler and Pickard Chilton are among the globally active firms that will design the 18 new buildings in the project.

The interior design team includes Roman & Williams, which will work on the planned five-star hotel and condominium project; Cecconi Simone, which will handle interiors for buildings designed by KPF; and Champalimaud, which will work on a 500-key hotel designed by Nichols Brosch Wurst Wolfe (NBWW) & Associates.

Water Street will feature more than 2 million square feet of office space, including the first new office towers in downtown Tampa in nearly 25 years, along with 1 million square feet of new retail and cultural space. The project will include 3,500 new residential apartment and condominium units, 630 new hotel keys and an arts/events pavilion.

SPP has donated land where the University of South Florida (USF) will relocate the Morsani College of Medicine and Health Heart Institute into a new 300,000-square-feet downtown facility.

The first phase of the multi-phased project is slated to include 11 groundbreakings and be completed by the end of 2020, totaling 4 million square feet of mixed-use space. Phase two of construction will be finished by 2023, and completion of the entire project is expected by 2027.
