Mitchell Friedel, a top retail executive known for his ground-up planning and leasing of mixed-use developments including the Time Warner Center's retail portion on the Upper West Side, has joined Newmark Grubb Knight Frank (NGKF) as an executive vice president in its national retail platform.
In his new role, Friedel will immediately take over two high-profile developments, and has been tasked as exclusive leasing consultant for Disney Springs - a new development for The Walt Disney Company in Orlando that will feature 350,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space.
"Our firm's goal is to provide the most comprehensive solutions for retailers and developers alike to get a competitive edge," said NGKF's Neal Golden, a vice chairman who is leading several national mixed-use projects. "Mitch gives us even more depth and expertise for our clients to capitalize on."
Friedel's successful retail career started at The Related Companies, where he was responsible for the lease-up at Time Warner Center with such prominent retailers as Tourneau, Williams-Sonoma and Sephora. The fully-leased shopping destination quieted skeptics who said retailers would never pay $400 per square foot. Today, the center ranks as one of the top three worldwide for sales per square foot.
While at Thor High Street Advisors and RKF & Associates, Friedel leased more than one million square feet at mixed-use projects along the East Coast, and has consulted on numerous other mixed-use developments and retail deals across the country.
"Mitch has shown time and time again, no matter where in the country, that he can help create a dynamic retail showpiece, ushering it from its genesis through to its ribbon-cutting," added Golden. "He knows that retail is the foundation for a mixed-use project's success."
A graduate of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, Friedel also holds a diploma in real estate investment analysis from New York University. He is a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) and is an active supporter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Friedel is a licensed salesperson in New York and Florida, and for his involvement with Time Warner Center was named to Crain's New York Business'
"Rising Stars: 40 Under 40" feature in 2004.
Barry Gosin, NGKF CEO, stated, "Across the country, mixed-use projects will continue to be the key to many of our most important new developments. Bringing Mitch in-house allows our clients to have access to one on the best retail advisors in the United States. We are excited to add his expertise to the fold as a part of our commitment to accelerate the growth of our national retail platform."
NGKF, its affiliates and partners offer retail advisory, site selection and analysis, appraisal, acquisition, due diligence, joint venture equity raising and mortgage finance, property and facilities management, investment sales, and more. Friedel noted this expansive, global footprint would provide him with greater opportunities to shepherd major mixed-use projects while offering a full-service experience to developers.
