Finnegans Sets Opening Date for New Brewery in Downtown Minneapolis

Finnegans’ Brewery and Taproom is Part of a Sweeping Redevelopment by Kraus-Anderson
February 7, 2018
Next month, Finnegans Brew Co. will open its new brewery and taproom at 817 Fifth Ave. S. in downtown Minneapolis.

The grand opening is set for 9 a.m. on March 17, St. Patrick’s Day, said Jacquie Berglund, CEO and co-founder of Finnegans, through a spokesperson. The 13,000-square-foot brewery and taproom is a collaborative effort with Minneapolis-based Finnegans and another craft beer company, Badger Hill Brewing Co. of Shakopee, which will share the brewery equipment.

Amenities will include the members-only Brewer’s Den social club, whose members will have access to a private, VIP space with meeting rooms, lounges and a shuffleboard court, according to an announcement sent out by Finnegans on Tuesday. The facility also includes a 4,058-square-foot beer garden, which may open on St. Patrick's Day if the weather is warm enough.

The taproom can seat 135, with capacity for 184 in all, Berglund said.

The brewery and taproom are just one piece of a four-story, 44,160-square-foot complex called Finnegans House, which will also include the FINNovation Lab, an entrepreneurship incubator and co-working space on the building’s fourth floor that will open in May. The FINNovation lab will be run as a partnership with Impact Hub MSP.

Officials with the developer, Minneapolis-based Kraus-Anderson, declined to disclose the total cost of the project but building permits on file with the city of Minneapolis add up to about $9.84 million.

In turn, Finnegans House is a part of a sweeping redevelopment project by Minneapolis’ Kraus-Anderson, which is in the final stretch of revamping an entire city block bounded by Eighth and Ninth Streets and Portland and Fifth Avenues.

The redevelopment includes a new, five-story, 100,000-square-foot headquarters building for Kraus-Anderson, which opened in fall of 2017; a 17-story, 307-unit multifamily building called the H.Q. apartments; and The Elliot Park Hotel, an eight-story, 165-unit boutique hotel that will be part of the Marriott Autograph Collection.

The apartment building will be move-in ready this spring. The hotel is expected to open over the summer.

Permits on file with the city indicate that the overall redevelopment project indicate that the cost is at least $100.2 million.

Finnegans is an 18-year-old craft beer company with a charitable mission. Since its inception it has used 100 percent of its profits to fight hunger, most notably through its reverse food truck operation, a mobile food shelf. The downtown facility will be its first brick-and-mortar retail and production location. Up until now, Finnegans has brewed its beers at other beer companies’ facilities.
