DuPont Fabros to Convert Former Toronto Star Printing Plant into Data Center

Washington, D.C. Firm Enters Toronto Market, Buys 673,000-SF Shell Facility for $54.3 Million
October 28, 2016
DuPont Fabros Technology (NYSE: DFT) has acquired the Toronto Star's former printing plant at 1 Century Place in Vaughan, Ontario which the Washington, D.C.-based owner, operator and manager of enterprise-class, carrier-neutral, multi-tenanted wholesale data centers will convert into a data center- its first in the Greater Toronto Area.

DuPont paid $54.25 million, or about $81 per square foot, to Metroland Media affiliate Torstar Corp. for the 673,373-square-foot facility. The complex delivered in 1992 on 43 acres within the York municipality of Vaughan.

The converted facility will be named TOR1 and include roughly 23 computer rooms and provide critical load of up to 46 megawatts, according to a DuPont press release. Initial services are expected to commence in the third quarter of 2013.

"We look forward to expanding our business into the Toronto market," said Christopher P. Eldredge, president and CEO of DuPont Fabros Technology. "We believe there is robust demand for first-class data center services in Toronto. Now that the purchase is complete, our pre-leasing efforts will target both existing and new customers who may need our premier wholesale data center services in Toronto."

Nick Yanovski of Cushman & Wakefield represented the vendor, while Randy Barron, also of Cushman & Wakefield, represented DuPont Fabros Technology.

Yanovski noted that the property was vacant at the time of sale as it was transferred as part of an owner-user transaction. Additionally, he noted that the property was divested as it was a surplus asset for Torstar.
