Department store retailer, Belk, Inc., will open a new e-commerce and distribution center in Union County in South Carolina. The $4.5 million capital investment is expected to generate 124 new full-time jobs over the next five years.
This is an expansion of the company’s current fulfillment center located in Pineville, North Carolina. The new 500,000-square-foot facility will be established in the former Disney Distribution Center located off of Highway 176 in Jonesville, SC. Operations are slated to begin in June 2012.
"Belk’s eCommerce growth has been very strong, and to accommodate the demand from our customers, we need additional fulfillment space. We are pleased to fulfill that need with this new facility in Union County," said Belk president and COO John R. Belk. "South Carolina offers us an excellent business environment, a strong workforce and exceptional access to markets. We appreciate all the support we’ve received from state and local officials in making this project a reality."
In 2011, $285 million was invested in South Carolina with 2,500 new jobs in the distribution and logistics sector. Governor Nikki Haley said, "It’s a great day in South Carolina and we celebrate Belk’s decision to invest $4.5 million and create 124 new jobs in Union county. We are committed to bringing new jobs to communities all across our state, and announcements like this show we are on the right track in our economic development efforts."
Union County had been working on this deal with Belk, Inc. for several months. The operation was formerly known as "Project Presents" and stated the county would enter into a 20-year free in lieu of taxes agreement with the retailer reducing property taxes to be paid from 10.5 percent to 6 percent. The county will also provide a special source revenue tax incentive and will designate the site as a multi-county industrial park.
