Global engineering and construction firm Bechtel announced plans to relocate its global headquarters from San Francisco to an expanded presence in Reston, VA, where the operational headquarters for its nuclear, security and environmental division is based.

The company said it will move corporate positions from Houston and San Francisco to the Washington, D.C., suburb in northern Virginia by the end of 2018. The consolidation will add about 150 jobs to the company’s presence in Reston.

Bechtel has made San Francisco its corporate headquarters for more than 100 years, but more recently Reston has served as Bechtel's de facto operation headquarters. Its corporate human resources department has been operating from there since at least 2015. And the privately held engineering firm has been using Reston as its headquarters location on press releases since at least 2017.

Bechtel, which was just ranked as the world's largest construction firm for the 20th year in a row by industry publication Engineering News-Record, said moving its headquarters to Reston was part of a larger reorganization to bring all of the firm’s senior management in one location.

"For more than a decade, Bechtel's corporate leadership has been distributed across Houston, Reston, and San Francisco," said Jack Futcher, Bechtel's chief operating officer. "Consolidating the corporate leadership and operations in Reston will enable the company to thrive in the current fast-paced business environment - one that demands faster and seamless decision-making, integration, and collaboration."

In the announcement, Bechtel said it remains committed to the markets in California and Texas. The company is working on, and pursuing, major infrastructure and energy projects in both states, and will maintain an office in San Francisco.

Bechtel currently occupies about 116,000 square feet at 50 Beale St. in San Francisco. However, according to CoStar data, it is reducing its occupancy by 115,461 square feet on Dec. 31 of this year.

Bechtel's Oil, Gas and Chemicals business unit will continue to be headquartered in Houston, where it occupies 441,523 square feet at 3000 Post Oak Blvd, through a lease that runs through the end of 2024.

Bechtel did not disclose the address of new headquarters designation and officials could not be reached for comment. David Churton, an international director out of Jones Lang LaSalle's San Francisco office, and Robb Johnson, managing director of JLL's Vienna, VA office, are handling the Bechtel negotiations.

Bechtel currently occupies 157,000 square feet at 12011 Sunset Hills Road in Reston and 72,464 square feet next door at 12021 Sunset Hills. Both buildings are owned by Boston Properties.

Earlier this year, Boston Properties secured Fannie Mae as the anchor tenant for its massive new Reston Gateway project in Reston. The mortgage financing government-sponsored enterprise will lease approximately 850,000 square feet of the one million-square-foot development located next to the Reston Town Center Metro Station on the Silver Line of the Metro.

The station is currently under construction and scheduled for completion in early 2020. Bechtel was a primary contractor in building the Silver Line.

Boston Properties is planning to develop the Reston Gateway project in multiple phases and said it could ultimately contain as much as 3.5 million rentable square feet of mixed-use, transit-oriented development.
