Amazon to Open Sixth Fulfillment Facility in Ohio

New 855,000-SF Center in West Jefferson to Create 1,500 Jobs

Continuing to expand its operations even as it considers the finalists for its new co-headquarters complex dubbed HQ2, said it will open an 855,000-square-foot customer fulfillment center in West Jefferson, Ohio.

The new warehouse, where workers will pick, pack and ship items such as electronics, books, housewares and toys to customers, will be the sixth Amazon facility in Ohio and its third in the Columbus area.

Slated to deliver by the end of 2019 at 1550 W. Main St., the new Amazon facility will be located in the Park 70 industrial park, a Duke Realty project. The announcement comes on the heels of Toronto-based Granite Real Estate Investment Trust’s agreement to pay $232.5 million to acquire four of Duke’s buildings in the park. The portfolio comprises 3.8 million square feet on 78 acres.

The Seattle-based online retailer currently operates facilities in Etna and Obetz, and it will launch operations at previously announced fulfillment centers in North Randall and Monroe by the end of 2018, and in Euclid in 2019.

“Our growth in Ohio is the result of an outstanding workforce and incredible customers and we are proud to be adding 1,500 new jobs to the more than 6,000 Amazonians already working in the state,” said Mark Stewart, Amazon’s VP of North America Customer Fulfillment, in the company’s press release.

Columbus is one of the finalists being considered for Amazon's big prize, the $5 billion "HQ2" co-headquarters expected to bring as many as 50,000 high-paying jobs. The online shopping giant, which in January said it had narrowed the list from 238 initial proposals to 20 finalists, expects to make a decision this year.

Also the new fulfillment center is the second major expansion announced in the month by the firm in one of its HQ2 markets. Earlier this month, Amazon announced plans to expand its Boston Tech Hub and create an additional 2,000 technology jobs to expand into 430,000 square feet at WS Development's massive Seaport waterfront project.
