Closures & Layoffs: GM More Layoffs Forthcoming

Correction: In the week of April 26 we incorrectly reported that Ply-Gem Windows was closing a plant in Rocky Mount, VA. In fact, Ply-Gem is moving work to that facility from other locations that are closing.

The Bank of New York Mellon is closing its Collateralized Debt Obligation Unit at 101 Barclay St. in New York. Layoffs will occur in phases: 30 employees to be laid off on Oct. 19, 10 employees on Nov. 16 and the rest on the closing of the unit on Dec. 21.

General Motors Co. announced that 6,024 U.S. hourly workers participated in the company's Special Attrition Program effective Aug. 1. Of the employees who opted to take the separation, approximately 40% were skilled trade employees, while 35% of participants were buy-outs. The numbers fell short of what GM was hoping for. GM has said it wants to reduce its payroll by another 7,500 employees by the end of the year.
